Change the filters regularly

Pure and clean drinking water is indispensable for our health. Reverse osmosis systems offer an advanced solution for water purification by removing impurities in an effective way.

However, in order for these systems to work efficiently, it is important to replace the filter cartridges regularly. In this text, we explain the most important points to look out for when buying replacement filters for your osmosis system.

Understanding filter types:

Osmosis systems usually use several filter stages to achieve ever finer and optimal cleaning. These include:

  1. Sediment filter: Removes particles such as sand, rust and other suspended solids.
  1. Activated carbon filter: Binds chlorine, pesticides and organic contaminants.
  1. Membrane filter: The reverse osmosis membrane filters out almost all dissolved substances and is the effective heart
  1. Post-filter: Polishes the water and improves the taste, often consisting of activated charcoal.
  1. Auxiliary filter/water revitalization filter: Restore trace elements, minerals and structure to the water.

AQUASAFE offers a complete range of replacement filters that are specially designed for the common phases of water filtration – sediment filters, activated carbon filters, post-filters, membranes and various auxiliary and water revitalization filters. This ensures that our customers receive the right solution for each stage of filtration.

For this purpose, you will find the respective illustrations of the filters in connection with the filter system on the replacement filter product pages in order to simplify the assignment. Furthermore, the customer service is also available to help you quickly.

Note: Additional filters/water revitalization filters can be replaced individually at AQUASAFE. This gives you the opportunity to try out a new filter.

AQUASAFE provides you with all the videos for filter changes on its own YouTube channel, so that filter changesmembrane changes or even disinfection are quick and easy.

Make sure you use high-quality filter materials. High-quality membranes and activated carbon filters ensure efficient filtration and also a longer service life of your reverse osmosis system.

Certifications by organizations such as the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) or the WQA (Water Quality Association) can be an indicator of true quality. Note: Unfortunately, there are also many providers on the market who illegally adorn themselves with these certifications.

  1. Sediment filter: These can be made of different materials such as spun polypropylene or woven fabric and vary in micron size, which determines the size of the particles they can filter out. The higher the micron number, the more permeable the filter is. A 5 micron filter allows more particles to pass through than a 1 micron filter.
  1. Activated carbon filter: Quality differences result from the source of the charcoal (e.g. coconut shells), the type of activation and the surface structure. Some filters contain loose activated carbon inside, other filters are available in pressed form, as a carbon block.
  1. Reverse osmosis membrane: Membranes can have different rejection rates for contaminants and can be made of different materials such as TFC (Thin Film Composite). The very fine mesh structure ensures an ultra-fine filtration line. The performance of the membrane is measured in GPD (Gallon Per Day) 1 gallon = 3.785 liters of water. However, it does not determine how effectively it filters, but how much water can be filtered per day.

AQUASAFE is a wholesaler of water filter systems and original replacement filters. Therefore, great importance is attached to high-quality materials and first-class production. The filters and hoses must therefore be NSF certified to confirm their effectiveness and safety.

Our tip: Check whether you can also purchase your replacement filters directly from AQUASAFE. Many intermediaries in the market only resell products. However, this also increases the prices for you. If you buy your filters directly from the wholesaler, you have the opportunity to save.

Compatibility and sizes of osmosis filters:

It is extremely important to make sure that the filter cartridges of your osmosis system fit your model exactly. If you use incorrect or incompatible filters, you could damage your system and thus affect the efficiency of water treatment.

By using suitable filters, you can ensure that your osmosis system works optimally and delivers clean drinking water.

In reverse osmosis systems, different types of filters are common, each with different dimensions. Here are some common sizes for the different types of filters:

Sediment and activated carbon pre-filters

These are usually available as standard or slim-line cartridges:

  • Default:
  • Typically 2.5 inches in diameter (approx. 6.35 cm)
  • Length often at 10 inches (approx. 25.4 cm) or 20 inches (approx. 50.8 cm)
  • Slim Line Size:
  • Often a little narrower with a diameter of about 2 inches (about 5.08 cm)
  • Length also at 10 inches (approx. 25.4 cm) or 20 inches (approx. 50.8 cm)
  • AQUASAFE filters:
  • Specially designed for AS5000 & AS5000FF models
  • Compact 7 inches in diameter (approx. 6.35 cm)
  • Length at 7 inches (approx. 17.8 cm)

Reverse osmosis membrane

The reverse osmosis membranes vary in size, depending on the power and the type of system:

  • Residential use:
  • Length typically at 11.75 inches (approx. 29.8 cm)
  • Diameter typically around 1.8 inches (approx. 4.6 cm)
  • Commercial facilities:
  • Larger diaphragm with diameters up to 4 inches (approx. 10.16 cm)
  • Length can vary from 14 inches (approx. 35.56 cm) to 40 inches (approx. 101.6 cm) or even longer

Post-filter (also called polishing or post-filter)

These can come in standard sizes, similar to the sediment and activated carbon filters:

  • Standard post-filter or additional filter (water revitalisation):
  • Mostly 2.5 inches in diameter (approx. 6.35 cm)
  • Length often at 10 inches (approx. 25.4 cm)

Please note that these are general measurements and there may be variations depending on the manufacturer and model. It is imperative to check the manufacturer's specifications for your particular reverse osmosis system before purchasing replacement filters.

In particular, the membrane filters can vary greatly in size depending on the system. Both filters that are too large and too small can lead to leaks or reduced functionality of the system.

Trust that only certified products should be used. Choose high-quality cartridges from trusted manufacturers. This not only ensures a longer service life of your system, but also continuous purification of the water at the highest level.

In addition to the in-house filters, AQUASAFE also offers replacement filters that fit a variety of common osmosis systems, including expensive models. The filters are designed to be easily integrated into existing systems to ensure seamless replacement.

Service life and capacity of filter cartridges:

The life of a filter is often given in gallons, but usually in months.

For example, according to the current legislation of the German Drinking Water Ordinance, a sediment filter should be replaced every 6 months, while the reverse osmosis membrane should be replaced after 24 months. Anything beyond that can significantly affect water quality.

An example: You can vacuum well with your vacuum cleaner until the bag is full. After that, dust and dirt can only be absorbed poorly. The same applies to a water filter.

Regular disinfection of the water filter system is also recommended for regular filter replacement in order to prevent the formation of germs and biofilms in the system and the hoses.

An example: You go on vacation for 2-3 weeks and do not use the water filter system during this time. Nevertheless, there is water in the system and the hoses. Since water is a perishable food, disinfection should be carried out here after the prolonged non-use of the system / holiday.

However, most water filter suppliers do not offer a disinfection option.

The AQUASAFE disinfection is a patented disinfection process from Germany and can be used for various osmosis systems using the first-user set. Here, AQUASAFE also provides you with helpful videos on disinfection on the YouTube channel so that you can restore the purity and safety of your reverse osmosis system.

Short and compact: When to change filters?

  • Pre-filter: Recommended every 6 months
  • Post-filter: Recommended every 6 months
  • Additional filter: Recommended every 6 months
  • Disinfection: Recommended every 3-6 months
  • Membrane: Recommended every 24 months

Filter Efficiency:

Be aware of the extent to which replacement filters can remove certain contaminants. The efficiency is often given as a percentage, which shows how effective the filter is in reducing pollutants.

Note: Basically, no one can and must not guarantee 100% or 99.9% filtering, which is why you should always be careful at this point.

With AQUASAFE filters, customers can benefit from a very high level of pollutant removal. The filters offered efficiently reduce a wide range of contaminants, such as heavy metals, microplastics, pesticides, germs, bacteria, nitrateplasticizers, drug residues, rust, chlorine, lead, and many more.

Replacement filter cost:

Very cheap filters or even large filter sets on various comparison portals and marketplaces can seem attractive at first, but you should also relate the costs to the filter life, quality and performance. Here, low-quality filters can also negatively affect your water quality.
